SOS! Is Climate Change Apocalypse Our Fate?
How important is it to understand the economic backdrop against the climate change crisis? This book thinks that it is the crux of the difficulty for direct and effective climate change solutions. It attempts to guide its readers through the capitalist economic lens to unpack the relationship and complex causes and effects between the capitalist components and climate friendly policies and actions, including profit incentive, investment practices, perpetual economic growth, resource allocation, labor and employment, economic development model, globalization, high tech companies and the technology industry.
Written in a creative non-fiction format by presenting true facts, theories and actual workings of our capitalist economy through a central fictional narrator and setting, this book is an educational tool challenging everyone, especially the younger people who will be disproportionately affected by the negative climate change impacts in the rapidly approaching future, to join the quest to unravel the mess of fixing climate change, the known and predictable but preventable existential crisis facing humankind; and to ponder the creative remedies to change our economy to tackle climate change head-on in order to save humanity and civilizations from probable decimation by climate apocalypse through inaction or inadequate response.
Through starting a new club and conducting meetings, a high school junior goes through the methodical and critical thinking, learning and problem-solving process of navigating and unpacking the layers upon layers of complications and challenges surrounding climate change. Ultimately, she finds it confounding and incomprehensible that the leaders of the world, as mature and responsible grown-ups, are shirking their duties to do the right thing, by failing to adopt and implement effective and practical actions and policies for climate mitigation in the face of imminently grave dangers and in the best interests of all humans, especially the younger generation like herself. She and her peers are left with no choice but forge ahead with their own agenda.
In the process, they find inspiration from human creativity and ingenuity and they think they have come through the challenge. Their version of an answer is logical and is worth pursuing. Will the grown-ups follow through and make it happen?
